This beautiful and gentle bedtime story shows Dad tucking up the little one with the reassurances that though Mum is not yet home, her presence and love is very real and right there. The rhyming text is soothing and the perfect prelude to sleep with the very real emotion that would accompany these situations . . . Not only a lovely night-time read but one for all those little people with mums whose work takes them away at more unusual hours. I highly recommend it for any collection for your youngest readers.
Kids' Book Review
This is the perfect picture book not only to show children that it is okay if mum can’t always tuck them in but also to show how the animal kingdom works in a very similar way. Moonlight Mums is an excellent book to read over and over again with little ones as a sweet and relaxing bedtime story.

The verses found on each page remind the readers of the routine at night time and the hugs received before drifting off to sleep. Each refrain repeats words preparing the child for sleep, showing other animals that wait for their mothers to return. The soft illustrations surround the reader with warmth and love as the offspring: human, animal or bird is enfolded within a mother’s arms . . . This will be a comforting book to read as a child goes to bed, reading aloud as the child falls asleep.

Utterly, completely adorable!

The rhyming text has a rhythmic lullaby quality that enhances the soothing tone and intent of the story . . . The parallels between the work of the different animal mothers and that of the little girl’s mother charmingly underscore the importance of her work and the reason that she does it. Young children whose mothers work, and particularly those whose mothers work night-time shifts, will see themselves and their families in this comforting picture book.
