Praise for Merlo Girls (Storycuts)

In Merlo Girls, the narrator and Steve, the husband of one of his female friends from uni days, pay one of their regular visits to Merlo's for fresh ground coffee beans. The narrator is a surgeon racked by arthritis, Steve a blustering type uncomfortable with middle age. Here, Earls perfectly captures both the awkwardness of these friendships by association and the unease often felt in these kinds of cooler-than-thou establishments.
